Plan to rename street after Chavez pulled from consideration for now

The controversial plan to rename a Portland street after Mexican-American labor leader César E. Chávez has been pulled from consideration, at least for now, officials said Wednesday.

KGW report

After hearing protests from both the Chinese and Latino communities, the Portland City Council voted unanimously Wednesday morning to end the Chávez renaming debate.

The Chávez Committee said it does not believe Fourth Avenue is the best choice for César Chávez Boulevard.

Background: Street renaming debate grows bitter

Fourth Ave. runs through historic China Town and the plan to rename the street angered many in Portland’s Chinese American community. It was the second street to come under consideration.

North Interstate Avenue was the street the Chavez Committee chose to rename. However, public outcry prompted city leaders to look elsewhere and the city council shifted the Chávez Boulevard idea to Fourth Ave. last week.

On Wednesday, the council admitted the compromise was hasty, reversed the idea and voted against renaming any street for now.

However, it may not be the end of the debate. The Latino community is expected to reconvene its renaming committee in a few weeks and take a new approach to renaming a street for Chávez.
