CAMAS, Wash. -- An Evergreen School District teacher has been charged in the shooting death of a man during a hunting expedition earlier this month.

Skamania County Detectives arrested Craig Sjoberg, of Camas, on suspicion of manslaughter charges.

Skamania County

Juan Rojas Cortez of Tacoma was picking bear grass for a company in the Skookum Meadows area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest when he was killed by a shot fired on November 1.

Deputies said Sjoberg was hunting in the area at the time, but released few details in the case.

According to a search warrant, Sjoberg voluntarily called investigators on November 4 saying he had read about the incident in the news and thought he was the guy they were looking for.

The 14-page affidavit for search warrant also suggests that several hunters in the area saw a man matching Sjoberg's physical description and his vehicle on the day of the fatal shooting.

Witnesses indicate, the man was hunting alone and was seen leaving the area.

One hunter explained, "It appeared as if the guy did not want to talk and he wanted to get out of the area quickly."

Sjoberg teaches seventh grade math at Shahala Middle School

He was scheduled to appear in court on November 20.
