Belmont grocery store shooter sentenced to 35 years in prison

The man convicted of shooting a father of two at a southeast Portland grocery store last March, leaving him paralyzed for life, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Friday, authorities said.

“I’m very, very sorry for the actions I have taken upon your family,” Jimmy Kashi said in court.

The victim's family showed Kashi pictures of Yeom in the hospital, gave the shooter an inscribed bible and said they have forgiven him.

According to Kashi’s brother Edmund, their mother would like to be a caregiver for Chester Yeom. Kashi said he also hopes to help take care of Yeom once he is released from jail.

Kashi had recently pleaded guilty to shooting 41-year-old Chester Yeom during the attempted robbery.

Yeom, who was tending the store for a friend that day, was paralyzed from the neck down in the shooting. He cannot speak and is confined to his bed in a nursing home.

His wife now runs the store they own, trying to keep the business afloat.
