OREGON CITY -- Two Oregon City High School girls were recently suspended after posting malicious online comments about their classmates, authorities said.

More than 30 female students were targeted on a Web site called myspace.com, according to police. The sophomore students who posted the comments referenced a violent movie, which is why school administrators contacted police in mid September after hearing about the postings.

"The threats were more implied than direct," said Lt. Mike Conrad with the Oregon City Police Department.

“Comments some people took as threats were something similar to, ‘if you saw the movie ‘Saw,’ you know what’s coming next,’ ” he said.

The targeted girls were named and ridiculed.

“I think it was mean-spirited to say the least. There were some very derogatory remarks about appearances, habits and personalities,” Conrad said.

To throw suspicion off themselves, the students who posted the comments even included their own names on the list, according to Conrad.

The girls were identified by their IP addresses.

Police handling juvenile cases were working to determine whether filing charges would be appropriate. The girls denied any intent to threaten or physically harm others. They returned to school after being suspended for a couple days.

Elsewhere, officials at Canby High School recently blocked access to a popular Web site apparently created by some of the school’s students. It contained hate speech directed at certain members of the student body. Some of the text was racist, sexist, homophobic and violent, according to students.

Administrators called police and planned to send letters home, notifying parents.

It’s unclear whether any crime was committed, authorities said.
