SALEM -- Two people were arrested Thursday night after allegedly trying to help a mental hospital patient escape, police said.

About 10 p.m., Oregon State Hospital staff noticed two suspects tampering with a fence on hospital property while holding cutting tools.

Hospital staff detained Thomas E. Boring, 29, and Monica Holbert, 50, said Oregon State Police Lieutenant Gregg Hastings.

The suspects drove to the area in an SUV stolen from Vancouver, Wash., Hastings said. During officers' search of the vehicle, they found methamphetamine.

Boring and Holbert were transported to Marion County Jail. They face charges including conspiracy to commit escape, conspiracy to commit criminal mischief, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
