The school says it's the largest single private donation in the school's 79-year history. It equals about a third of the foundation's current endowment.
Officials say the money comes in two gifts.
One is $1 million for scholarships for women, underrepresented minority group students and other students.
The second is $500,000 for unrestricted uses.
Officials say proceeds from the endowment should be available for scholarships by the fall. The criteria for students are still being worked out.
The donation was announced Friday by President Dixie Lund, who said its effect "will be extraordinary and felt for many years to come."
