WILSONVILLE – A man trying to escape from state troopers led police on a high-speed chase before overturning the SUV he was driving, police said Tuesday.

An Oregon State Police trooper stopped a northbound SUV on Interstate 5 for a lane change signal violation Tuesday afternoon.

The two male occupants were outside the Chevrolet Tahoe during the citation when the passenger suddenly got inside and drove away, leaving the original driver, police said.

As the trooper chased the vehicle, the original driver was seen running west across the northbound lanes.

The driver of the Tahoe sped over 100 mph and used both shoulders to pass other traffic, police said. While using the left shoulder to pass another SUV, the Tahoe driver collided with the other vehicle, lost control and traveled across three northbound lanes and off the shoulder, where it overturned.

The driver crawled out of a window and ran eastbound with two troopers behind him. After scaling two fences, the troopers caught up and took him into custody.

Police have not identified the driver involved in the crash. He was transported by ambulance to Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Troopers didn’t find the original driver, who was last seen walking westbound on Butteville Road from the freeway.

He was described as a Hispanic male, about 30 years old, 5'5" tall and weighing about 175 pounds. He had a white, cloudy colored right eye in the pupil area, police said.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call OSP Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888.
