Four killed in I-84 crash involving suspected drunk driver

A Carlton-area man is in custody after an overnight crash that left three men and one woman dead.

46-year-old John Cole Carlgren was arrested and charged with four counts of second degree manslaughter and DUII.

The accident happened just after midnight on Sunday morning on I-84 near Pendleton.

Officers with the Oregon State Police said that a 1991 Chevrolet Beretta driven by 29-year-old Jessie Klien of Hermiston was struck from behind by a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by 46-year-old John Cole Carlgren of Carlton.

Both vehicles were travelling in the westbound lanes when the accident happened.

Klien and his three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The passengers were identified as 29-year-old Michelle Sawyer of Lynwood Wash., 24-year-old William Johnson from Hermiston and 31-year-old Fred A. Young Junior of Boardman.

Carlgren was initially taken to a hospital for treatment and then arrested and lodged into the Umatilla County Jail on four counts of second degree manslaughter and DUI.
