Sheridan contractor killed in Iraq, family says

10:19 PM PDT on Friday, October 13, 2006

Associated Press

An Oregon man working as a contractor for Halliburton has been killed in Iraq, his family says.

Craig Johnson, 40, of Sheridan, spent nearly three years in Iraq, according to Colleen Martin, his twin sister.

She said family members still are seeking details of when, where and how her only brother died. His ashes were being flown to Oregon on Friday with a co-worker.

Johnson drove oil tankers and was a supervisor in Iraq. "He felt it was important," Martin said. "It was helping the military and their mission over there."

A Portland native, Johnson graduated from Madison High School in 1984 and joined the Navy. He was based in San Diego from 1986-90, Martin said.

When he returned to Portland, he earned a commercial truck driver's license.

In December 2003, Martin said, her brother went to Iraq to work for KBR with Halliburton, taking a leave of absence from Columbia Distributing Co., where he had worked for nearly three years.

A Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville. Another Mass will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 21 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Portland. Johnson attended the church's school, St. Rose School, now Archbishop Howard School, through eighth grade.

Survivors include his wife, Shannon; mother, Annabelle; father, Frank "Cliff"; and sisters, Cindy Burke, Cheryl Benson, Connie DeVaney, Christine Johnson and Colleen Martin.
