'Miraculous recovery' for six-year-old boy rescued from ditch
05:06 PM PDT on Saturday, October 11, 2008
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy who wandered away from school and was dragged unconscious and not breathing from an irrigation ditch is making what his parents were calling a "miraculous recovery."
Phillip Baehne of Central Point says his son, Luke, was removed from a ventilator on Friday. Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland has upgraded his condition from critical to serious.
He says the child is sneezing and coughing but showing no signs of pneumonia, and the swelling in his brain has diminished so much that doctors can reduce the level of medication. A feeding tube is expected to be removed soon.
Police say Luke wandered away from a special education program at Jacksonville Elementary School during recess Tuesday. A school employee found him later in the ditch.
