It happened Thursday afternoon near 14th and Burnside when 19-year-old Tracey Sparling collided with a cement truck making a right turn at a light.
A medical examiner Friday said she died of neck and chest injuries.
Someone left a white memorial 'ghost bike' at the scene, where mourners placed flowers and condolence messages.
The Salem woman was formerly a major in magazine journalism at Syracuse University, where she was a Dean’s list student.
Police said the driver did not see the cyclist, who started across when the light turned green at the same time the truck started turning. There was no evidence the 54-year-old driver was impaired.
No citations were issued, and police continued to investigate.
On the Bike Portland blog, cyclists said they planned a ride up Burnside Friday night.
It was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the west approach to the Burnside Bridge, which is now closed to cars.
