Seven families displaced in house slide, wondering what's next
04:51 PM PDT on Friday, October 10, 2008
PORTLAND -- The homes of seven families living in Southwest Portland are off limits more than two days after ground underneath a residence at 6438 SW Burlingame Place became unstable, causing the home to slide down a steep hill and crash into two other structures below.
Kathy and Dave Hendrickson’s home is gone, destroyed after it slid from its perch on Burlingame Place down a hillside into the homes situated below, on Terwilliger Boulevard.
The house of Oregon Health Sciences University Dr. Ben Chou sat immediately below the Hendricksons and bore the brunt of damage. But another home next door, belonging to David York and his family, also was badly damaged.

And then there is Shan Hemphill, whose home was left unscathed by Wednesday’s slide. His home sits on the other side of York and Dr. Chou. The Hendricksons’ home barely missed his property line when it came to rest on Terwilliger.
Hemphill counts himself lucky that no material possessions have been lost, yet, but he too finds himself unable to return home while engineers and city officials try and determine why the hillside above gave way.
One owner who’s been barred from returning home spoke with kgw.com. He was reluctant to discuss his family’s status. But he did say “Friday marked the first real day I realized what had happened.”
“I’m still not allowed in my home. I’m feeling very unsettled -- more now than before,” he said. “It’s really starting to sink in, what happened.”
The homeowners are working with structural engineers and inspectors to find out what, if anything, the insurance companies will do for them.

Some are still trying to figure out where they’ll stay for the short- and long-term.
“Where will we stay this week? In the coming months? I don’t know yet,” said one homeowner, who was reluctant to be named. “We’re hoping for a good settlement.”
