There's a new way of crossing for Portland bicyclists.

On Monday the city started a new experiment at East Burnside and 41st Avenue.

It's a bike signal unlike anything you've seen before.

Cyclists push a button and a triangular light signal activates. This forces cars to stop on Burnside street until the cyclists have crossed.

It's a Mickey Mouse-shaped signal with two flashing reds atop a single yellow light, coupled with a special cross signal for cyclists that illuminates a green bicycle icon.

Bike commuter Mia Burke was one of the first to use the new device.

”I use this corridor a lot going back and forth to Hollywood and this is a tough intersection, it's hard to get a gap so this is going to be great, it's going to make a big difference,” Burke said

The traffic signal shuts off and disappears until another cyclist re-activates it.

The idea comes from Tuscon, Arizona.

Portland has deemed 41st and East Burnside the toughest crossing of the eight-mile cycling corridor, according to the city.

The project is funded by a $140,000 grant from the ODOT's bike and pedestrian program.
