Inmate takes hostage in Clark County Jail

08:11 AM PDT on Tuesday, October 7, 2008

By ERICA HEARTQUIST, KGW Staff

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A man took his cellmate hostage in the Clark County Jail Monday, causing a security alert, authorities said.

KGW report on hostage

The incident started around 9 p.m., when Michael Jacobson, 20, began banging on the bunk bed in his cell, according to Sergeant Scott Schanaker with the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Custody officers in the jail questioned Jacobson and “he began to demand to speak to the media, to be moved to a different cell and to have fast food from a local restaurant delivered to him," Schanaker said. “Jacobson then used a sharpened piece of plastic from a utensil to take his cellmate, Kenny Madarash, 21, hostage.”

Southwest Washington regional SWAT officers were called in to deal with the incident. Around 10:30 p.m., they used a noise diversion device, called a flash-bang grenade, to enter the cell and were able to help the hostage.

Madarash, of Vancouver, suffered a minor cut to his arm, but other than that, he was okay, jail officials said.

Jacobson has been in the Clark County Jail since June after he was extradited from Idaho on charges of Superior Court warrant for rape of a child. Now, he'll go back to court on Nov. 11th for the hostage situation.

“Jacobson has had difficulty transitioning into the Clark County Jail and until [Monday] night when he began sharing a cell with Madarash had remained housed separately from other inmates since his arrival,” said Sgt. Schanaker.

Major crimes detectives were investigating the crime scene within the jail, said Sgt. Schanaker.

“It is unknown at this time the motivation for this hostage situation other than the brief demands Jacobson made,” said Sgt. Schanaker.
