Nike co-founder backs Measure 49 with $100,000

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight has added to the campaign chest for the Yes on 49 effort to scale back development under the Measure 37 property rights law passed by voters in 2004.

Knight has donated $100,000 to Yes on 49 to support the November ballot measure.

Former Governor Vic Atiyeh asked him for a contribution to the campaign, which boasts Governor Kulongoski and former governors John Kitzhaber and Barbara Roberts as honorary co-chairs.

Yamhill County winery owner Eric Lemelson of Dayton is the leading donor in the campaign, with a total of $925,000.

Lemelson says Measure 37 development claims border his vineyards, and he -- like other winemakers -- is concerned about the future of farming in Oregon.
