Gresham woman sentenced for scalding of 5-month-old
10:12 PM PDT on Sunday, October 5, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 25-year-old Gresham woman has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for scalding a 5-month-old for whom she was providing day care.
Prosecutors said Dawna Bigelow burned the baby on purpose. She said it was an accident. In July, a jury convicted her of assault and criminal mistreatment.

On Friday, Judge Richard Baldwin sentenced her. He rejected the argument of Bigelow's attorney, who said the child wasn't permanently scarred and showed no evidence of lasting psychological trauma.
The child, Kellee Kuhl, recovered from the January burn without scars. Doctors told her mother that adult skin would have been permanently scarred.
