Record numbers participate in 36th annual Portland Marathon
09:50 AM PDT on Monday, October 8, 2007
The 36th annual Portland Marathon brought out a record number of participants for Sunday morning's race.
This year's marathon winner was 26-year-old Carlos Siqueiros of San Jose California with a finish time of two hours, twenty five minutes and twenty six seconds.
Even a slight change in the marathon course and chilly temps didn't dampen the spirits of the 9,300 hard-core runners and walkers.
Due to light rail construction, the portion of the route through downtown was slightly altered with the race starting at SW 3rd and SW Salmon.
Runners began by heading west on Salmon and then turn left onto SW Fifth Ave. for one block and then right on Main for two blocks to Broadway. From there it was a right on Broadway and a downhill stretch to NW Davis. A right turn on NW Davis took runners to SW Front Ave./Naito Blvd. where they'll make another right. At this point the course followed the same route as in previous years.
The Portland Marathon has been rated one of the premier marathon events in the United States. It was ranked as one of the top 10 local road race events in the U.S, and one of the top 40 races of all types and distances.
Runner's World has called the Portland Marathon "the best people's marathon in the West" and for the past ten years has ranked it as one of the top 10 or 15 marathons in the country.
