Ideas unveiled for Sellwood Bridge solutions
01:51 PM PDT on Tuesday, October 2, 2007
New plans were laid out Monday for upgrades to Portland’s most dangerous bridge.
Officials for the next six months will look over four options, including an entire new bridge in the same spot, rehabilitating the existing bridge or building new bridges to the north or south of the current site.

A new bridge would have three lanes, including one for a possible streetcar, and a 20-foot wide lower deck for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Making over the existing bridge, engineers would reinforce it and feature two 11-foot traffic lanes, a shared bike path, and two shared-use sidewalks.

The two other options would call for either a 64- or 75-foot wide bridge with bike lanes, paths and a transit lane for the 75-foot option.
The bridge policy group is considering traffic control ideas for connecting the bridge to Highway 43, including a signalized interchange, a roundabout with no signal or a controlled interchange with no signal.
They would all allow through traffic on Highway 43 to pass under the interchange on a lower level without stopping.
A draft Environmental Impact Statement will also being completed by next spring.
