PORTLAND -- A man who police said has been arrested 31 times punched a Portland officer in the face Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The officer was responding to reports of a person urinating under the Hawthorne Bridge in Waterfront Park, just before 2 p.m., when he arrived to find two transients fighting.

Then, the officer managed to break up the fight and orders the two men to sit down and give him their IDs. That’s when the officer said suspect Mathew Renfroe attacked him.

“He swears at the PPI officer, punches him in the face and takes the officer to the ground where he continues punching him,” said Cathe Kent with the Portland Police Bureau. “The other transient gets him off the PPI officer.”

Police said they know Renfroe well and he has been arrested 31 times since 2005.

“His arrests frequently include charges of resisting arrest, drinking in public, disorderly conduct, vandalism, and indecent exposure,” said.

Added that earlier this year, Renfroe slipped out of his handcuffs while under arrest in a patrol car and urinated onto the officer’s front seat.

Renfroe can now add several charges to his rap sheet: assault, failure to obey a park officer, alcohol in the park and urinating in the park.

The officer was treated for facial cuts, a black eye and a fat lip.
