Obama cutout hung from tree

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Four students have confessed to involvement in the hanging of a cardboard cutout of Sen. Barack Obama from a tree on the George Fox University academic quad.

The school’s Office of Student Life identified the students late last week and has completed a disciplinary hearing.

All four students face long-term suspension and community service.

Background: Obama effigy found in tree

“Regardless of the students’ intent, the image of a black man hung from a tree is one of the most hurtful symbols of racism in American history,” said Brad Lau, vice president of student life. “Displays such as this have no place on a campus that is dedicated to living out the teachings of Jesus.”

The university is not identifying the students, citing federal law.

University President Robin Baker announced the investigation results to the George Fox community at a campus meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

After consulting with state and federal authorities the Newberg Police Department determined the students broke no specific state laws. Law enforcement is not involved in any disciplinary actions.

The university, along with Portland City Young Life and the Act Six program, have announced a joint forum to address the incident and racial reconciliation issues on Friday at 4 p.m. at Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church.
