Funding obstacles slow I-5 bridge plan

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Members of Congress from Oregon and Washington state say it's unlikely the federal government will put up as much money for a new bridge across the Columbia River as local backers of the project hope.
Oregon and Washington planners have assumed members from the two states could get $400 million to $600 million.
The Interstate 5 bridge is expected to cost $4 billion, if built as planned with 12 lanes and light-rail trains.
But Oregon Representative Peter DeFazio and Washington senator Patty Murray say it will be tough to get that much. Both are on key transportation committees.

They blame sentiment against earmarks, gasoline tax shortfalls, and the financial bailout.
That could mean the bridge will have to be redesigned.
