PORTLAND, Ore. -- The unemployment rate in the Portland metro area surged from 5.4 percent in July to 6 percent in August, seasonally adjusted.
Nearly 72,000 Portland-area residents were unemployed last month -- roughly 15,000 more than a year ago.
The state's unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in August.
The national rate was 6.1 percent.
