Searchers found notes Thursday near the Stetattle Creek Trail saying the 33-year-old woman was out of food. Wingfield was first thought to be missing near Darrington, Wash., where she told friends she was going camping over the weekend, but they moved the search north when a Seattle City Light worker spotted her car, a 1997 Toyota Corolla with Washington plates, near the Stetattle Creek trail head.

Friends said the notes are a positive sign.

"It was a big relief to feel like we were actually close to her now," said Simon Adriane, her friend.

One note was found scribbled on notebook paper about a mile up the creek, buried in a pile of rocks. Another was found on the back of a dental card.

"She wrote her name. She wrote that she was out of food and water and needs help. She also indicated that she was going to continue downstream," said searcher George Ratacyk.

One note read that she became lost on Sept. 16, a Sunday, but it wasn't clear when the notes were written.

Wingfield sent a text message to friends on Saturday, September 14, saying she was going camping at Buck or Sulphur Creek near Darrington, but never returned on Sunday evening as planned.

Twenty-five people were part of the search last night near Stetattle Creek, and 30 more joined the search Friday morning, Shilling said.

Friends and family said she was an avid hiker and often hikes alone.
