Group claiming to be Indian tribe faces possible charges
07:43 AM PDT on Tuesday, September 19, 2006
CENTRAL POINT, Ore. -- Central Point police say they are considering charges against a group claiming to be an American Indian tribe.
Police say the group that calls itself the "Latgawa" tribe is issuing its own driver's licenses, license plates and insurance cards to its 300 members.
The group also claims it can exercise police powers-- including prosecuting members in its own court and hauling them to jail in a retired police Crown Victoria vehicle.
But the organization is not recognized as one of Oregon's nine Indian tribes.
One of the group's leaders say police are holding computers seized during a search without filing any charges.
