LONGVIEW, Wash. -- A Longview man hit a detective with his car and then dragged the officer behind his vehicle Wednesday, police said.

The detective was trying to arrest Raymond Rutherford when the suspect reportedly ran for his car and jumped into the driver’s seat. Then, police said Rutherford backed into the detective.

At that point, the detective somehow got stuck on the car and was dragged down an alley until he managed to pull out his gun.

“The detective was able to draw his weapon and fire into the vehicle. The suspect stopped the vehicle quickly, knocking the detective off of the car,” said Capt. Dan Jacobs with the Longview Police Department.

Then, the suspect fled in his car once again but officers were able to stop him in the 1000 block of 16th Avenue, where he and a female passenger jumped out of the vehicle and ran.

He didn’t get far though; the suspect was captured in the 1000 block of 17th Avenue.

Rutherford was booked into jail for assault with a deadly weapon and theft, with bail set at $200,000.

The incident began outside an apartment complex in the 800 block of 9th Avenue in Longview.
