Sam Adams fights back against 'nasty smear'

City Commissioner Sam Adams addressed Portland residents through an open letter to the public Tuesday, defending himself against what he calls a “nasty smear by a would-be political opponent.”

The “smear” apparently involves accusations or insinuations by Portland developer Bob Ball that Adams had an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old boy in 2005.
At the time, the then-teenager, Beau Breedlove, was an intern in the Oregon House.
Adams insists he was only a mentor and friend to the teen, who is also gay, and soon moved to Portland.

The two shared meals on occasion and Adams attended Breedlove’s 18th birthday party, Adams said.

Neither Adams nor Ball has announced plans to run for mayor but Adams is considered a top contender to replace Mayor Tom Potter.
