Benton County Sheriff Diana Simpson said the Piper Cherokee 140 single engine plane crashed about eight miles West of Alsea.
Simpson said the plane was last seen flying over the home of the pilot’s family on Wednesday. Family members told sheriff’s deputies they saw the plane fly overhead then heard what sounded like a crash a short time later.
Family members reportedly did not hear from the pilot the next day and went out looking any signs of the plane. Simpson said they called the Sheriff’s department when they came up empty handed.
The plane was located by family members around 4:00 p.m. Thursday, just before authorities arrived on scene.
Sheriff Simpson said there were two adult males on board. She was waiting to release their identities until next-of-kin notifications were complete.
The plane apparently crashed in a wooded area.
The Federal Aviation Administration will take over the investigation on Friday.
