PORTLAND, Ore. -- Olympian Kara Goucher says she'll run in the New York City Marathon, making her debut at the distance.

Goucher, who won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2007 world championships, lives and trains in Portland under three-time New York City Marathon winner Alberto Salazar.

"My heart was set on New York," Goucher said. "And Alberto's heart was set on New York for me. It's the most prestigious marathon in the world, it always has the best runners, it's a challenging course, and I was born there. I always wanted my first one to be there."

Salazar also made his marathon debut in New York City.

"Our wish has been granted," said Mary Wittenberg of the New York Road Runners, which organizes the event. "Kara will follow in the footsteps and with the help of her coach and mentor, the marathon's last great American star, three-time winner Alberto Salazar. This is a two-for-one deal. We get Kara, and she comes with the benefit of Alberto's experience. I anticipate another milestone in American long-distance running."

Goucher won the 5,000 meters at the U.S. track trials in Eugene this summer, and came in second in the 10,000 meters.

She ran in both events in Beijing, placing 10th in the 10,000 meters and ninth in the 5,000 meters.

Last year, Goucher set an American record for a half-marathon in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 57 seconds at the Great North Run in England.

The New York City Marathon is scheduled for Nov. 2.
