PORTLAND, Ore. -- Authorities in Los Cabos Mexico say the investigation of the death of an Oregon tourist in police custody is moving forward quickly.

Botner Family

Sam Botners wife says her husband was beaten to death in a Mexican jail.

Now several witness accounts could prove critical in building a murder case against the police officers involved in the death of Sam Botner.

 Background: Mexico jail death

Botner was arrested on August 27 in the parking lot of a beachfront condominium for pulling a knife during a fight with another guest.

The state attorney general's office in Los Cabos said investigators were looking at both forensic evidence and witness accounts in an effort to piece together what happened the night Botner died.

Some of the witnesses will get the chance to look at the detained officers in a police lineup.

The state attorney general would not comment on camera but said about half a dozen witnesses saw the police officers with the Oregon man.

A doctor who examined him in custody only noted two wounds. The autopsy showed he had been beaten. The attorney general also said a toxicology report showed Botner had cocaine and meth in his bloodstream, but no alcohol

Four patrolmen and two officers at the station who had contact with Botner are in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
