Teacher from Portland missing in New York City
05:50 PM PDT on Friday, September 5, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) -- A 23-year-old New York City school teacher has disappeared just days before classes began.
Family and friends of Hannah Upp were looking for the Portland native since last week. Police say Upp was last seen about 2:30 p.m. Friday as she left her apartment in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood.
Portland friend Ann Huntwork says the thought that Upp would "walk off" right before school started doesn't sound like something she would do. She says it "doesn't sound like she left of her own free will."
A $10,000 reward was also offered in the case.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Hannah and her family during this trying time," united Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said. " We have reached out to her family and the NYPD offering to help in any way we can."
Upp's roommates found the Bryn Mawr graduate's keys, phone, ATM card, MetroCard, wallet and passport in her room.
Upp was teaching at the Thurgood Marshall Academy.
Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
