AT&T to forgive $20,000 charge racked up by Ore. teen

By ANNE YEAGER for Kgw.com

A Beaverton man who received an AT&T monthly service bill of $20,000 has won his fight against the company.

Dave Terry’s son used a laptop with an AT&T AirCard on a July business trip to Canada. The service allowed him to get international internet service anywhere. The family says they were told by an AT&T representative that they were on an unlimited plan.

Terry’s son used the service 21 times during his four day trip. When the bill came, the Terry family was stunned.

“I thought it was a mistake. It had to be a mistake, “ said Dave Terry.

The bill was $19,370.

Terry called AT&T, who told him the bill was so high because of international charges.

“There should be a system in place to call customers when it gets that high.” Terry said. “What if it was stolen?”

After KGW and other media outlets tried contacting AT&T, Dave Terry’s phone rang.

“It was a guy who says he was the customer service equivalent of the vice president of AT&T.” Terry said. “He told me that the charges were erroneous and that there was a glitch in the system”

So what’s the bill now? Zero.

In a statement, AT&T told News Channel 8 “We are committed to excellent customer service. After reviewing the charges and the circumstances, we adjusted the bill to his satisfaction."

Terry feels vindicated. He had planed to drop his AT&T service for his personal and business phones. Not anymore.
