ST. HELENS, Ore. -- Detectives were questioning a person of interest in the murder that shook up a quiet small town in rural Northwestern Oregon last month.

KGW report on murder

Investigators said 24-year-old Joshua Wayne Cubbage, of Rainier, was arrested on a felony probation violation in an unrelated case on Thursday night. But he was also wanted as a "person of interest" in the murder of 62-year-old Vernon McCullough on August 25.

McCullough lived alone in the 32000 block of Highland Road, in the small town of Goble between Rainier and Deer Island. Investigators told KGW they found McCullough's body Monday outside his home.

Police said Cubbage lived for a time as a neighbor of McCullough's. They also said he sometimes lived as a transient.

Neighbors told KGW McMullough lived without water or electricity at the property. The area is wooded and rural, and neighbors were shocked by the news of his death.

 Background: Community stunned by murder

The Daily News described McCullough as a reclusive Vietnam veteran and retired grocery store employee.

Anyone with information in the case was asked to call police. If you see him call 9-1-1.
