MIssing hikers found

BRIDAL VEIL, Ore. -- All five missing hikers have now been found safe in the Columbia River Gorge after spending one night lost on the mountain.

The group of seven friends from church left for a 10-mile day hike to Horsetail Falls Monday and split up because they were traveling at different speeds. Only two of them made it back to the trailhead as planned Monday night and a third walked out alone early Tuesday morning.

Two of the remaining four lost hikers called for help on a cell phone Monday night and police told them to stay where they were and settle in for the night. Rescuers managed to pinpoint their location Tuesday morning, by tracing the cell phone, and safely led them off the mountain.

Then, around 10:30 a.m., authorities found the two remaining missing hikers and began leading them down to the trailhead as well.

Daniel Shultz, 17, of Beaverton, is the young man who walked out alone early Tuesday morning. He told KGW he had no idea where his friends had wandered to.

"I don't even know how I figured my way down the mountain because we were really high up," he said. "I was making my way down the trail just by stepping and trying to figure out what was path and what was death."

“Temperatures last night were in the low to mid 40s. It is believed the hikers had adequate clothing and a small ration of food and water,” deputy Joe Graziano with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said during the search effort.

Searchers began looking for the lost hikers at first light Tuesday morning. A command post was also set up at the Multnomah Falls main parking lot along I-84.

Authorities said all seven of the hikers were from Beaverton, ranging in age from 17 to 27, and knew one another from attending the Mormon church on Canyon Road.
