SELMA, Ore. (AP) -- Dispatchers say the Oregon fire season going into September has fewer than half a dozen large blazes remaining.

The Gnarl Ridge Fire shown here in a viewer photo, put up a smoke plume on Saturday that was visible for miles.
Among them:
-- Helicopters are being used to check the Rattle Fire in the Boulder Creek Wilderness east of Roseburg. It's burning in a 945-acre area with logs and snags that make it dangerous for firefighters.
-- Near Selma, the two-week-old Horse Mountain Fire is under control, with lines around the 1,062-acre area. It was the largest fire in Josephine County this summer, touched off by lightning on Aug. 16.
-- Near the Ragar Ranger Station in Central Oregon, a 1,620-acre fire is being managed for its benefits, called "wildland fire use." Firefighters say they've established a perimeter and will manage the fire within that.
