PORTLAND -- A dramatic police chase through East Portland and along I-205 was caught on tape and ended with one man in jail.

Raw: Portland police chase

The high-speed chase started around 1 a.m. Friday morning. Police said the suspect was trying to shoplift at WinCo Foods in Northeast Portland and then he nearly ran over a security officer when fleeing in his car. When officers arrived, the suspect, later identified as Robert Cooper, was on the way out of the parking lot.

Soon after, a police chase ensued.

Oregon Department of Transportation cameras were rolling on the chase that ended on the freeway. Officers tried to perform several manuevers by rear-ending Cooper's car. The car spun out but the suspect kept going.

At one point, the suspect drove over a couple of spike strips, but that didn't stop him, either. It took two cop cars to finally stop the vehicle. The officers slammed into the suspect's car and pushed it onto the opposite shoulder.

Cooper was taken into custody without incident and charged with one count each of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Attempted Theft in the Second Degree and Reckless Endangering.

KGW tried to talk to WinCo employees inside the store, but the store manager said they were not allowed to talk to the media about what had happened.
