Ft. Lewis troops among soldiers killed in chopper crash

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Four of 14 American soldiers on board a U.S. helicopter killed in a crash in northern Iraq were from Ft. Lewis.
The military said the Black Hawk helicopter was one of two taking part in a nighttime operation. A statement said there is no indication it was shot down. Early signs point to some sort of mechanical problem.
The helicopter was part of the 4th Squadron, 6th U.S. Air Cavalry which deployed to Iraq in May. Of the 14 soldiers who died, four were members of the 4-6 air cavalry.
A family pastor identifies one of those killed as Capt. Corry Paul Tyler. The names of the other soldiers have not been released by the military.

The four crewmembers and 10 soldiers on board were assigned to Task Force Lightning.
Because of ambushes and roadside bombs, the military relies heavily on helicopters to move troops around. But dozens of choppers have crashed, either from accidents or hostile fire.
The latest crash is the worst since January 2005. That's when a Sea Stallion transport went down in a sandstorm in western Iraq, killing 31 Americans.
