Driver leads police on chase from Newberg to Portland
07:59 AM PDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A driver led police on a chase that stretched from Newberg to Sherwood, King City, and Tigard Wednesday night before officers finally managed to stop him in Portland.
Police said they first got reports of the reckless driver in Newberg just after 6:30 p.m. and it didn’t take long for an officer to find the gray Dodge Caravan that “was weaving recklessly in and out of traffic and causing considerable concern for other motorists,” according to Sgt. Tim Weaver with the Newberg-Dundee Police Department.
The officer signaled the driver to stop but John Barbosa, 52, of White City instead took off northbound on Highway 99W, police said.
Officer followed him all the way to Portland and then near the Rose Quarter, “a Portland police Bureau officer successfully used a spike strip and the van's tires began deflating. The van continued along I-5, then south on I-405, over the Fremont Bridge, then westbound onto Hwy 26,” Weaver explained. “The van stopped on Hwy 26 near Exit 68, at Cedar Hills, after driving on the deflated tires and rims for some distance.”
Barbosa was arrested about an hour after the chase began. He was charged with attempt to elude an officer, and reckless driving and more possible charges were pending, “including the possibility the van was involved in a hit and run crash sometime during the elude or earlier in the day,” Weaver said.
