10:26 AM PDT on Monday, August 11, 2008
MT HOOD, Ore. -- 14 people were injured in a three-vehicle accident along Highway 26 around 3:25 p.m. Sunday.
The accident happened at mile marker 47 along Highway 26 in the community of Rhododendron near Mt. Hood.
According the Oregon State Police a 2007 Toyota Tundra pickup driven by Qui Nguyen, 33, from Hillsboro was eastbound and suddenly moved into the westbound lane.
A 1998 Chevrolet pickup towing a horse trailer in the westbound lane swerved onto the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision with the Toyota. The Toyota sideswiped the Chevrolet and trailer then crashed into a 2000 Subaru Legacy wagon behind the trailer.
Nguyen and one of his passengers, 15-year-old Steven Phan, were taken by Life Flight to Emanuel Hospital with serious injuries. Nguyen’s four other passengers were transported by ambulance with minor injuries. At least two children in the vehicle were not properly using seat belts and booster seats.
