Shades of gray color August skies

12:15 PM PDT on Wednesday, August 8, 2007

by DAVID KROUGH, kgw.com Staff

Portlanders awoke Wednesday to more autumn-like skies and many wondered, where has the August sunshine gone?

The average percentage of overcast skies for August is about 30 percent, according to the National Weather Service. But so far it’s been about 100 percent this year.

Your turn: What do you think of the less-than summer weather?

KGW Meteorologist Joe Michaels said there were some sun breaks coming, but there’s a lot of onshore flow from the Coast pushing in the clouds.

“It’s pretty wild, we see sunshine usually” this time of year Michaels said.

Rainfall totals so far this month were below average, with temps a bit below average.

Last year, there had already been twice as many days at 90 degrees as this year. And between June 21 and August 8, there were 13 days below 75 degrees, compared to only eight last year.

Michaels said there would be a little mor esunshine each day until the weekend. The clouds coming ashore will likely move to the north as the week progresses.

Forecasters predicted the possibility of more sun by the weekend, so crowds should be able to stay dry to chow down at the Bite of Oregon on the waterfront.
