A young woman pinned in a car overnight in the Columbia Gorge faces “life-changing” injuries, doctors said Friday.
Rescuers pried 19-year-old Roxann Marie Pope out of her SUV Wednesday evening after it had plunged 50-60 feet down an embankment off Old Columbia River Highway.
Pope was listed in serious condition Friday at OHSU where doctors said she suffered one punctured lung and part of the other, and spinal injuries.
Doctors said her legs were not moving, but she was able to move her arms. She was sedated, but unable to talk due to a tracheotomy tube.
Pope left her job at the Multnomah Falls Lodge Tuesday around 9:30 p.m. Investigators said it looked like she overcorrected around a dangerous curve and her SUV went off the road. She spent about 17 hours pinned in the vehicle.
Police think she may have been speeding.

Pope’s parents spotted the vehicle after they had been combing the area and called police.
A rope rescue team was able to get her out and to an ambulance and a LifeFlight helicopter.
Pope faced at least three weeks in the hospital and rehabilitation.
