ALBANY, Ore. -- Friends of Deborah Davis, the woman shot to death in Albany on Tuesday, described her as a friendly and warm-hearted mother and weight-loss counselor who loved singing in the Willamette Masters Chorus.

Friend and coworker Peggy Burris was one of the last people to see Davis alive. The two parted ways around 8:30 Tuesday night at the Albany Weight Watchers. Burris offered Davis a ride home but was turned down.

Two hours later, Davis' husband ran to his neighbor's home to report a shooting.

In Salem, where Davis sang in the Willamette Masters Chorus, her love of folk music and her dedication to improving her voice were remembered.

"When asked to do something special for the chorus, she was always willing to that with a smile," said Paul Klemme.

Detectives on Thursday located the handgun they believe was used in a shooting Tuesday night at a home in Albany that left Davis dead, another man wounded, and the Davis's husband injured.

Officers said they were trying to sort out what happened Tuesday night -- that's when both people were shot in the head. Davis's husband was slightly injured.Davis, 58, was taken to Samaritan Albany General Hospital where she later was pronounced dead. Joel Jensen, 28, was taken to the same hospital, and then to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Davis's husband, Tim Hardin, 56, called police from a neighbor's house.

Neighbors said Jensen appeared to live with Hardin and Davis over the past several months.

Police say Hardin told him he was beaten by Jensen when he tried to call police during an argument inside the home. Hardin told officers he managed to get outside and heard several gun shots as he ran to a neighbor's home for help.

Detectives searched the house and even the home's roof trying to support or disprove Hardin's version of events. They have not talked with Jensen because of his injuries.

Capt. Eric Carter said police were not sure what happened between Jensen and Davis.

"We are uncertain if ... Joel Jensen shot himself, or the wife, or both," Carter said.

Hardin "was treated and released, and he has spoken with investigators. He had a laceration or lacerations to his head. He was struck in the head," Carter said. He said it's unknown what struck Hardin.

The couple operated Hardin Davis, a fisheries and watershed consulting business. They also led eco-tours and their Buzzard Brand web site shows the couple having fun in the outdoors with guests. If you've been on one of the tours, or know the Carters and want to talk to KGW, send an e-mail to reporter Pat Dooris.

Sara Ingle, an acquaintance of Davis and Hardins, described the couple as hardworking and family-oriented.

“This is one of those neighborhoods where you would never envision it happening and it did,” said neighbor Sam Toy.
