PHILOMATH, Ore. -- A Philomath man was charged with trying to kidnap his ex-girlfriend and then her mother in a violent police standoff early Monday.

Oregon State Police said a Philomath officer was called to a burglary at the home on S. 15th Street just before 1 a.m. Detectives said 49-year-old William Martin was armed with handgun and trying to force his 51-year old ex-girlfriend into a pickup, but got distracted by the officer and the woman ran.

According to investigators, the officer fired one shot during the confrontation, missing Martin, who ran inside and then tried to take the victim’s 74-year-old mother hostage.

Officers from OSP, several surrounding area agencies and a SWAT team were locked in a two-hour standoff at the home before Martin surrendered peacefully.

Martin was charged with kidnapping, burglary, menacing and violating a restraining order.

No one was hurt.
