GRESHAM -- The father of a baby boy abandoned at a Gresham motel was charged Friday with child abandonment and the rape of a 16-year-old girl in an unrelated incident.

Police are trying to identify this little boy, who was abandoned in Gresham Thursday.

Danny D. Martinez, 36, of Wyoming, was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail. His bail was set at $10,000, said Gresham Police spokesman Mike Dalby.

The 7-month-old infant's mother is in prison in Wyoming.

Martinez allegedly raped the teen Thursday morning at the Super 8 Motel at 121 N.E. 181st Ave., Gresham, said Grant McCormick, a spokesman for Gresham Police. The 16-year-old girl reported the incident to police later that afternoon, he said.

It's uncertain how the two met prior to the alleged statutory rape.

No other details could be provided, McCormick said, because the girl is underage.

While Martinez was at the Super 8 motel, he apparently gave his son Stefeno to someone to babysit.

McCormick said the babysitter disappeared and the baby was found late Thursday night by two teenage sisters in the laundry hallway at the Golden Knight Motel at 750 E. Powell Boulevard. The baby had a blanket, bottle and car seat with him.

A custody hearing was scheduled next week for Martinez's son.

Brittney Williams, 15, who along with her sister discovered the baby, said the baby was "happy, healthy, and chubby."

"I'm surprised. It is (the) first time a baby was left here," said Motel Manager Tom Patel, who did not recognize the baby.

Oregon Child Welfare staff took the baby into protective custody, McCormick said.

Oregon's "Safe Haven" law allows parents (guardians) to anonymously leave a child at an authorized facility, but only applies to infants 30 days of age or younger, McCormick said.
