NBC’s Today Show studied research Friday to figure out how many bridges across the nation match the truss style of the bridge that collapsed in Minnesota this week and Oregon was among the top five states.

The study found 756 bridges across the nation that were built in a style similar to that of the of the 35W bridge in Minneapolis that plummeted more than 50 feet into the Mississippi River Wednesday morning.

That list included 38 bridges in Oregon.

Other states listed in the top 5 were Ohio, with 187 truss-style bridges, California with 59, Pennsylvania with 47, and New York with 33; ranking Oregon as number 4.

NBC reporter Robert Hager said in his report that the federal government is asking that all states with these truss-style bridges immediately inspect the bridges and review all past inspections.

Officials with the Oregon Department of Transportation have not yet commented on the findings of the research.

Wash. state responds to inspection demands

Meantime, in Washington state, officials Friday said they were following federal recommendations regarding inspections.

“Interim Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond directed this morning that WSDOT bridge engineers follow a technical advisory letter from FHWA recommending that WSDOT and all bridge owners should "review inspection reports, including those for routine, in-depth, fracture critical, and underwater, to determine whether more detailed inspections are warranted," explained Lloyd D. Brown, Director of Communications for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

WSDOT crews have inspected 10 state-owned steel truss bridges within the past six months and all of those studies will now be reviewed. Governor Chris Gregoire also requested copies of the inspection reports.

"Motorist safety is our number one concern and bridge safety is an important aspect of that, but the incident this week emphasizes the need for continued diligence," Hammond urged Friday. "It's important for people to know that we did not wait until this disaster to inspect and maintain our bridges."
