PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Steel Bridge closed to traffic will get even more restrictions starting Saturday and its just one of many closures slated for the day in Portland.

KGW report on closures

Trimet said the MAX won't run on the Steel Bridge, starting on Saturday, due to work on a new line between Gateway Transit Center and Clackamas Town Center, and to 5th and 6th avenues in downtown Portland between Union Station and Portland State University.

The bridge will remain closed for three weeks.

There will be no MAX service between the Rose Quarter Transit Center and the Old Town/Chinatown stations either, and shuttle buses would take riders across the Willamette River. Officials said riders should allow an extra 15-30 minutes for the ride. The lower deck would be open for pedestrians and cyclists.

Elsewhere, citizens will face another bridge interruption this weekend so spectators can watch the Red Bull Flugtag on the waterfront. The Hawthorne Bridge will lose half of its lanes and a sidewalk for viewing of the river down below.

And further north, Marine Drive will be shut down on Saturday and Sunday mornings, to accommodate separate triathlon competitions.

And Sandy Boulevard will be closed Saturday for the Parkrose Festival and Cruise-in.

TriMet officials said they’ve been warning riders for weeks with signs. There will be special shuttles to transport passengers to their destinations, but riders were warned to allow at least an extra 30 minutes for travel time.
