Students create Portland's Big Give
05:54 PM PDT on Sunday, July 27, 2008
Inspired by Oprah’s big give, a group of Utah college students brightened a Sandy man’s day Sunday.
Jerry Miller owned a 1947 Chevy Coup. Miller thought he sold the car to Utah college student Alex Coomb as a gift for Alex’s grandfather.
Alex and the group of students spent the summer in Sandy earning money for school by going door to door selling cable services.
But Alex wanted to help someone in the process and that’s when they found Miller.
A former garbage truck driver, Miller lost his leg in a work accident a few years ago. Money was tight, so Miller had to sell his beloved Chevy.
Instead, the students stepped in, raised money and refurbished the classic car. Miller helped, too by letting them do the work in his garage.
With the help of local businesses, they turned the car into a show piece.
Sunday afternoon, they gathered Miller and his family and presented him with the car at the Fly In Cruise in in Sandy.
I was feeling for them because they were fixing it up for their grandfather I had no idea they were fixing it up for me. It's a shock!," said Miller.
The students said it’s a lesson for them, that in giving, they were the ones receiving.
