SALEM -- Two drivers were spotted speeding over 117 miles an hour along Highway 22 in Marion County Wednesday, according to an officer who said he caught them both on radar.

Suspect Gavin Bonney as shown in a police mug shot.

Dep. Kevin Ely was patrolling Hwy. 22 when he spotted the first car, a Ford Mustang. Ely said he clocked the car going 123 mph on radar. Then, moments later, a Honda Civic sped by and it too was caught on Ely’s radar. This time, the car was going 117 mph.

Ely noted the license plate of the civic and followed the Mustang.

He was eventually able to pull over and arrest the driver of the Mustang, identified as Gavin L. Bonney, 21, for reckless driving. Bonney was transported to the Marion County Jail for booking.

Several hours later, Deputy Ely located the second vehicle at the registered owner's home and cited the driver, identified as Joseph F. Smith, 18, of Salem. He was also charged with careless driving.

Smith told police that he was speeding in order to catch the license plate of the Mustang, which he said was driving recklessly. But MCSO Dispatch had not received any calls regarding a reckless driver at that time, according to Ely.

The fine for speeding in excess of 100 mph is $1103.

Since January 2008, the Marion County Sheriff's Office has issued 13 citations for drivers speeding over 100 mph.
