Hit-and-run driver slams into man changing flat on I-205
09:59 AM PDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008
WEST LINN, Ore. -- A man trying to change a flat tire along I-205 early Wednesday morning was hit by a passing driver who left him lying in the road, police said.
Glen Ridderbush, 57, was traveling north on Interstate-205 when he said one of the tires on his Ford pickup truck went flat. So he pulled off on the shoulder to change the tire around 2 a.m.
But he was struck by a passing vehicle while kneeling down to remove the lug nuts, according to Sgt. Neil Hennelly with the West Linn Police Department.
He was in pain and calling for help but the driver of the car that hit him took off, police said.
Two workers at a nearby shopping center heard the crash and Ridderbush’s cries for help and called 9-1-1.
Riderbush was transported by ambulance to Oregon Health and Science University for treatment of two broken ankles.
Now police were gathering clues they hope will lead them to the hit-and-run driver. Sgt. Steve Taylor said he found two pieces of silver, body-side molding with a chrome strip imbedded in them that likely came from the car which hit Ridderbush.
Police have not yet released a detailed description of the car, but said it would likely have damage to the right side.
Anyone with information that may help in the investigation was urged to call police at 503-655-6214.
