Coast Guard distress call investigated as possible hoax

SEATTLE - Coast Guard officers have called off their search for the source of a radio call Tuesday from a young girl who identified herself only as "Kelsey" and are now investigating whether the call was a hoax.

Listen to girl's distress call

The little girl said she was 6-years old and called the Coast Guard about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, saying that someone with her - possibly named "Kelly" - was "in the water" and was "not waking up."

The transmission was picked up on radio towers in southern Puget Sound. A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Port Angeles and a small boat crew from Seattle searched the area but found no sign of the little girl.

After searching and questioning about a hundred vessels in the area, Coast Guard officials called off the search Wednesday morning.

Officials say if it is a hoax it would be a heinous act because of the resources that were spent overnight.

Coast Guard officials reported no overdues or missing persons.  Coast Guard boats in the area were also working on a flare sighting, but they believe that was a separate incident.

Anyone who heard this little girl on the radio, or who can provide additional information, is requested to contact Coast Guard Sector Seattle at 206-217-6001.
