Police charge naked bank robber in Milwaukie
03:37 PM PDT on Saturday, July 15, 2006
MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- A naked man who had allegedly robbed the US Bank in Milwaukie and hid in an nearby gazebo was arrested Friday afternoon by sheriff’s deputies. kgw.com/CCSO Paul Jarvis faces several charges in a Milwaukie bank robbery. The man, identified as Paul E. Jarvis, 36, was charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree attempted burglary, and first-degree robbery, said Detective Jim Strovink, a spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. He said Jarvis has an extensive criminal history with multiple prior arrests in Oregon, West Virginia, Alaska and California. He was spotted around 6 p.m. by a resident behind the Clackamas County Communications Center minutes after the robbery. The resident said Jarvis had soiled himself and was holding money in his hands before jumping a fence, Strovink said. Sheriff's deputies, who had converged on the area after a 9-1-1 call about an armed bank robbery at the U.S. Bank at 15533 S.E. McLoughlin Boulevard, believed it was the same person who robbed the bank, he said. Witnesses said Jarvis was wearing clothes when he allegedly robbed the bank, Strovink said. Deputies and a canine unit searched the area of Southeast Swain and East Avenue, just west of McLoughlin Boulevard in Milwaukie. Canine Deputy Don Boone and his canine partner ‘Bruno' located Jarvis hiding in a gazebo at the rear of a residence at 15416 S.E. East Avenue, near the intersection of Southeast Swain and Risley. At the time of his arrest, Jarvis was wearing only a pair of extra large trousers. He also received several, minor dog bites during the course of his arrest. An undetermined amount of money was recovered at the scene, Strovink said. He said the deputies also discovered an outbuilding had been burglarized and cans of paint had been used by Jarvis as an inhalant. They also found a rear sliding glass door screen had been removed by the suspect in an apparent attempt to gain entry into the residence. A woman and her young child occupied this dwelling at the time, but were not harmed during the incident. Investigators described Jarvis as incoherent from possibly inhaling the paint he had located in the storage shed of this residence, or possibly from some other unknown source, Strovink said. He was treated for the minor dog bites and transported to the Clackamas County Jail.
